What is Oxide?
In welding, oxides are compounds formed when a metal reacts with oxygen, and they can be detrimental to the weld quality. Oxides can weaken the weld, cause porosity, and lead to other defects.
If required, we offer additional Nitric 2 Passivation onsite per ASTM A967 to remove the free iron from the surface of your parts, leaving a protective chromium-rich oxide passive layer.
What is Nitric 2 Passivation?
Nitric 2 passivation is a specific method of treating stainless steel using a nitric acid solution, as defined by standards like ASTM A967. It involves immersing the stainless steel in a nitric acid solution for a minimum of 30 minutes. This process removes free iron and other contaminants from the surface, promoting the formation of a passive chromium oxide layer, which enhances corrosion resistance.
